12/14/14 UPDATE

EVENING OF HOLIDAY JAZZ

Thanks to everyone who came out to hear the Jazz Band and intermediate ensembles at Capitol Grill on Tuesday.

One of the audience members at the event commented on the band Facebook page:

I am a regular patron of Capitol Grill and wanted to extend my appreciation for your band. You young men and women were excellent and showed great appreciation for classic jazz, rock, and blues. You are to be commended on your dedication to the art of music. Although most will do something different in your professional careers, you will always run into a new friend who loves music similarly, and you may even blow the dust off your instrument and share a common tune with family and friends. God Bless and Merry Christmas!

Thank you to Vicki Tirman for helping to organize the event.

CORKY'S FUNDRAISER

Thanks to everyone who supported the Booster Corky's sale fundraiser this year. Here Will Thomas helps to sort the orders.

This will be the final blog update until the New Year. We hope all our band families have a wonderful break and a festive and blessed holiday.

Here are some links to a few memories for Christmas, with thanks to the students, families, and school administration whose support and efforts allow this unique program to exist!

11/2/14 UPDATE

CONGRATULATIONS, JA BAND!!

2014 Bands of America San Antonio Super Regional Class A Champions!

The JA Band had a very successful trip to San Antonio, earning Best Music, Best General Effect, and FIRST PLACE in Class A at the BOA Super Regional. Their score was over five points higher than the second place band, and the crowd responded with enthusiastic standing ovations. In the photo above, the JA Band is shown during Finals Retreat -- 24 Mississippians with over 3000 Texans!

Here are a few comments from participants in the BOA live blog during the JA Band's performances at the Alamodome:

"Right off the bat, the Earth Wind and Fire takes hold and grooves with lots of cool September sax jazz technique and gorgeous integrated guardwork. This show is tons of fun from beginning to end. The guard timing is fantastic, especially with all of the rifle and pretty purple flag work in the ballad. The backfield pit drumset section provides a lot of awesome drive to this show. Give a big hand to this awesome little group from all the way out in Mississippi!"

"The individual musicianship is off the charts for Jackson Academy!"

"I always love watching this little band from Mississippi, they have so much heart, soul, and fun."

"So much artful jazz musicianship from Jackson Academy."

"A lot of toe-tapping music in this show! Everyone in the stands is having a blast!"

"What an awesome way to open the evening! So amazing what this little band can do!"

"One of the best Class Exhibitions that I've ever seen; thank you!"

"They were thrilled to be here, and so were we to watch them! Way to go Jackson Academy!"

Many thanks to the parents who came on the trip, for chaperoning and helping to get the mat and poles on and off the field for both performances. Thanks to the parents at home for donating drinks and snacks.

Thank you also to the students, not only for their great performances, but also for their exemplary behavior all weekend. The hotel staff had effusive praise for our students' maturity and courtesy.

BOA SAN ANTONIO TRIP

There will be a parent meeting to distribute trip information on Tuesday, 10/28, at 7:00 in the band hall (during evening rehearsal).

Each student will need to bring enough meal money for lunches and dinners on the trip, usually fast food. Breakfast is complimentary each morning at the hotel.

There are also a couple of optional activities for which students may want to bring money.

At Six Flags Fiesta Texas on Friday night, admission tickets will be provided to each student. These tickets provide admission to the park, and all rides and shows. If a student would like an extra dose of "thrill", there are wristbands available for purchase that allow admittance to several premium haunted houses in the park. These wristbands are $20.

On Saturday morning and early afternoon, if there are enough students who wish to go, we will take the bus to Natural Bridge Caverns. There are caverns, a rope course/zip line, and maze, with pricing determined by choice of activities. Click on the link for more info: Natural Bridge Caverns

If you have any questions about the trip, contact trip planner Sue Guindon at sue.guindon@gmail.com.
